Live the nature

Short walks on the property
From the Main house towards the mountain, the paths of the forest unwind, from which it is possible to reach the parking area, but also the area dedicated to the typical jobs of the forest, where an ancient charcoal pit has been faithfully reconstructed.
The Charcoal path
Along the coal route, the significant stages of processing and preparation have been reconstructed which in the end led to the creation of the charcoal pit, that, once the fire was lit ,allowed the extraction of charcoal, ideal for heating and to cook.

Return “TO SEE THE STARS AGAIN"
Podere Bagnoli is located in the woods at 300mt. above sea level and away from direct light sources. Just the distance from the growing light pollution that characterizes the urbanized areas of our cities, allows us to appreciate the beauty of the deep starry sky and objects that have now become invisible in other contexts. From this position you can relive the exciting show of shooting stars that characterize the skies at different times of the year: from the Perseids of the night of San Lorenzo, to the Aquarids of January, to the Orionids of October. The traditional constellations of our northern hemisphere will be visible, the ones of the southern hemisphere and those stars that for centuries have been fixed references for navigation and nocturnal activities (polar star and the three stars of Orion’s belt).

The water's way
The presence of springs in the area has always been of importance for the rulers of Castagneto in order to provide water for the population.
Around the mid-1800s, Count Ugolino della Gherardesca built the first municipal aqueduct, used to supply the town of Castagneto with water.
The work began in 1863, and ended in 1866, collected the waters of the Count Piero, from the “Fonte di San Jacopo” and the “Fonte di Bagnoli”. The conduit built with terra cotta pipes was characterized by two bridges that allowed the crossing of important waterways. The two bridges still in excellent condition are visible along the walking path.

Medium lenght walks from the property
From the Property, there are various paths into the woods. The road that leads to Bagnoli, continues towards Piastraia and from this road, there are numerous paths that lead further upstream towards the ” Vecchia Campigliese”, as well as downstream. It is possible to follow a ring-shaped route which, crossing the “Fosso dei Molini” and two ancient bridges of the aqueduct (one of which is part of the property), leads back to the Property.
The old Campigliese street
Campiglia from 1421 to 1716 was the most important and populous center of the upper Maremma as the seat of the Court, the Chancellery and the Captaincy. The road connected Castagneto to Campiglia passing on the crest of the hills. Although it was a ridge route, and therefore very tough, it was the shortest and safest one. Today large stretches of the old stone pavement are still visible which made it usable even to the wagons of the time.

The street of the old mills
The mill road was the link between the farms of Bagnoli and Castagneto. It started from the center of the town and, after a steep descent, reached the Mill of Rotone (at the bottom of the valley) and then went up again towards Bagnoli.
Along its route are three mills in the valley and it ends at the beginning of the cultivated fields.

The road to piastraia
From “via dei Mulin”i it is possible to continue on, following the path of the “Fosso dei Mulini” up to “Loc. La Collacchia”, the point from which three internal roads branch off. One reached the ridge of the mountain as far as”Loc. la Fiora”, one headed towards the Poderi di Bagnoli and the other towards the Loc.Piastraia and then descended towards the Tower of Donoratico.

Walks through history, hills and sea.
From Podere Bagnoli, through the paths in the woods, you can reach small villages (the closest are Sassetta, San Vincenzo, Campiglia Marittima and, of course, Castagneto Carducci), rich in history, beauty and traditions, as well as the ancient Tower of Donoratico and the sea. Heading towards Bolgheri, you can cross the scattered areas of the vineyards that produce the famous Red wines (Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Guado al Tasso…) until you reach the small village, which houses important wineries and wine bars.
